Specialized Safety and Performance Equipment
In addition to raw power, Harvey Gulf has continuously upgraded and enhanced the safety and operational features on its OTVs:
Shark Jaws
: Shark Jaws clamp down and hold the rig's tow wire in place while the crew connects the wire to the vessel's tow gear. Once connected, the stem deck is cleared, and the Captain remotely releases the Shark Jaws to safely release the wire for towing. This feature greatly reduces the risk of accidents during towing operations. Harvey Gulf has installed "Shark Jaws" on all but one of its OTVs.
Bow Thrusters
: Bow Thrusters help a tug "hold station" while backing up to a rig to connect or disconnect during marginal weather conditions. They also allow a tug to hold station when assisting a rig in loop current situations.
Kort Nozzles
: The kort nozzle is a stainless steel shrouded propeller assembly for marine propulsion. Kort nozzles can be significantly more efficient than traditional, open propellers. A kort nozzle can also produce as much as 50% greater thrust per unit than a propeller operating without a one. Equally important, a kort nozzle is an important safety feature that prevents a propeller from slicing into a rig if the OTV comes too close to a rig during connection.
Dynamic Positioning Capabilities
: Two of Harvey Gulf's OTV's that support semi-submersible rig moves, the HARVEY TITAN and the HARVEY WAR HORSE II, are equipped for DP-1 operation.
